HWY 1 Updates - May 1 2024

The road is open to tourist traffic again as of April 30 2024! Big Sur River Inn is open for business in the restaurant and hotel! Book a room today to stay in Big Sur and Live Like a Local!

While road construction continues on the Rocky Creek Slipout, HWY 1 is open to all traffic during two convoy times at 7am and 5pm daily. We expect the road to be fully opened from Carmel to Big Sur with 24hr regular access by May 25 2024.

This means everyone can visit Big Sur right now, as long as you drive the highway south from Carmel at 7am and plan to return in the same day during the 5pm convoy.

Alternatively you can rent one of our 22 rooms and stay for as long as you’d like with us in Big Sur.

If you plan a trip to Big Sur during this time, please do your best to arrive at the convoy within 15 minutes of the 7am and 5pm convoy times so that you ensure passage over the active construction zone.

Read below for more details:

At this time, Highway 1 is partially open to our North at Rocky Creek Bridge but is still closed to our South at Limekiln State Park. Guests can visit Big Sur and the Big Sur River Inn by driving through the partial closure at Rocky Creek Bridge via 2 convoys per day. The first convoy is at 7am; the second is at 5pm. All visitors are welcome in the morning convoy. The evening convoy is reserved for residents, essential workers, and guests with overnight reservations only. Please arrive within 15 minutes of the convoy time to ensure that you make it through. Guests staying with us overnight are requested to have a printed copy of their hotel reservation, or a picture of it on their phone.

We are very excited to welcome you back to the River Inn and look forward to seeing you soon! Our restaurant is now open from 8am to 8pm and our Hotel Reception is open from 11am - 7pm daily. Thank You.
